Originally, Puritans settled on a small peninsula which was subsequently steadily expanded - to gain more space for the city to expand, improve the harbour, bury pollution, build public parks, add shipping facilities, build appealing neighbourhoods or the airport. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo ensure stability, buildings were anchored into the harder layer of clay below the landfill using long wood pilings. Sitting entirely below the water level, they were protected from rotting. Unfortunately, environmental changes such as droughts or even damage to sewer pipes can drop water levels, exposing the wood to oxygen and causing it to rot.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMany buildings have since had their pilings replaced to ensure historic infrastructure's stability.
