The idea that we are defined by a handful of core memories has been popularised across books and movies. Indeed, it does seems to hold true that all of us feel like some memories stick so much more than others.

Though these intense recollections most definitely play a part in shaping our sense of self, social interactions and future behaviour, they are not limited to a certain number. Neither are there a few that always take the front seat - like skills, some memories may be more relevant depending on the context.

As across much of our lives, we cannot control what our brain chooses do: how intensely, if at all, it will remember. But, given that there is plenty of science to back that highly emotional events are more likely to stick with us, it is well worth giving yourself a minute to breathe and feel when you find yourself in a moment to remember.
