As the mountains are drenched in fresh light, their rugged flanks reveal rough surfaces made up of a multitude of geological formations. Here atop the Furka, the predominant granite massif is interrupted by a softer metamorphic marl and dolomite layer. Having soil nurtured by a wide array of minerals in close proximity has lead to a rich diversity of species in the area.

This location is very special for another reason: the nearby Witenwasserenstock (not depicted) forms the continental watershed between three great European river systems - the Rhine flows towards the North Sea, the Rhône towards the Mediterranean and the Po towards the Black Sea. To put simply: A rain drop that lands atop its peak could end up in one of these three great oceans. How cool.
