First Quarter

First Quarter

Sydney, Australia

When exactly half of the Moon's illuminated surface is visible from Earth, we are observing the first or third quarter of a moon phase - the point at which it has travelled a quarter or three-quarters of the way through its orbit.

To tell whether we are approaching a full or new moon, you may want to use the following trick, for the Southern Hemisphere: in this image, you could spell the word 'Growing' if you were to use the 'round' side on the left - the Moon is therefore heading towards its full phase. If the 'round' side were on the right, you could spell the word 'Decreasing' - the moon would be heading towards a new phase.

On the Northern Hemisphere, the Moon is observed on its head (yes, let's flip the 'Downunder' notion for this one). To be able to tell what phase it is in, you would have to flip the abovementioned theory. Have fun observing!
