If the 'round' side were on the right, you could spell the word 'Decreasing' - the moon would be heading towards a new phase.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the Northern Hemisphere, the Moon is observed on its head (yes, let's flip the 'Downunder' notion for this one). To be able to tell what phase it is in, you would have to flip the abovementioned theory.
