Grass is Greener

Grass is Greener

Thurgau, Switzerland

In some places the grass really is greener. In Switzerland, hay season runs from June to October - during which farmers cut, dry and store grass as winter feed for livestock. Reaching the most remote pastures takes immense effort and intricate knowledge, built over centuries of tradition.

Many fields contribute to conservation and biodiversity through wildflower growth. The government pays farmers special subsidies to harvest their hay after a certain date - ensuring blossoming season has past depending on the ecological classification of the land.

Many alpine fields are too steep to operate heavy machinery on, in which case the traditional act of 'Wildheuen' is done by hand. Farmers and seasonal labourers work their way along steep hillsides, collecting the dry grass in large nets called 'Pinggel'. Historically, these used to be transported back to the valley on sledges - today, technological advances allow helicopters to carry up to 1 tonne of hay per minute.
