Fed by glacial melt, they contain very fine pulverized rock particles known as glacial flour, which is produced as glaciers grind their way through rocky valleys.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eDue to the fine nature of the particles, they are slow to sink to the bottom and therefore remain suspended in the water. When sunlight hits the water, various wavelengths are absorbed: the shortest ones – purple and indigo – are absorbed by the particles while the longer ones – red, orange and yellow – are absorbed by the water.
