Pasture

Thurgau, Switzerland

Alpine pastures cover roughly one-third of of Switzerland's farmland. As highly valuable biodiverse ecosystems, their sustainable management is supported by special government payments to farmers practising seasonal grazing.

In spring, farmers guide livestock from the valleys up to higher altitude pastures as part of the traditional 'Alpaufzug'. Throughout summer the animals graze on the biodiverse alpine flora, enhancing the quality of their milk which contributes to the traditional unique array of Swiss cheeses. As the seasons change, the 'Alpabzug' sees the return of the herds and their farmers to the valley accompanied by local celebrations.

This cycle of transhumance - the traditional pastoral practise involving seasonal movement - is deeply engrained in Swiss farming and has been recognised by UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
