Black Swan

Black Swan

Tasmania, Australia

A native Australian bird, the black swan can be found in very specific ponds: requiring a runway of at least 40m to take off, it chooses to reside in larger bodies of water. Watching it take to the skies reveals another surprising fact: the undersides of its wings are in fact white.

For Millenia, Europeans firmly believed swans could only be white - until the Dutch found Australia and its native black swan population. It was a remarkable instance of proving the dangers of declaring something impossible or inducing based on repeated observations.

If you are interested in learning more about what these birds can teach us, the book 'The Black Swan' dives deep into the overconfidence a long run of confirming evidence may produce - and how unexpected events shape us much more than regular happenings.

Who could have known that a simple (or not so simple) black bird can teach us so much about life?
