If you have spent some time in the Alps in autumn, you will be very familiar with waking to a blanket of fog of a morning.

Approaching winter, we are greeted by longer nights and a cooling atmosphere. As the sun sets for the day, the air cools, sinks and accumulates in valleys - a process known as cold air drainage. Throughout the night, falling temperatures cause the air to cool further, before it eventually reaches its dew point at which water vapor condenses into fog. 

It takes the sun to rise and work its magic for the blanket to disappear - as the air warms throughout the morning, it absorbs the fog and leaves you with a crystal clear surprise.
