Solid and frozen? Yes, but also constantly in motion. Though at different speeds, all glaciers flow, grow and melt. The Aletsch moves at a rate of up to 200m per year at the Konkordiaplatz, it's thickest point.

Destructive and massive? Yes, but also delicate and endangered. Glaciers are very sensitive to temperature variations and even minor changes can throw them off balance. 2022 & 2023, two consecutive extreme years, Swiss glaciers lost 10% of their total mass. A century from now, small patches may be all that is left of this one - the significance of which we are yet to grapple with.

Decoration and destination? Yes, but also dependable. It has moulded our landscapes, regulated our temperatures and provided stability for millennia. It's a living history book and nature's money bank. One that all of us are reliant on and responsible for.

And if we take care of it, we'll get to enjoy and profit from it in return.
